Sometimes the streets of New York are crowded, humming with traffic, and noisy with honking horns. And for most New Yorkers, they wouldn’t have it any other way. But for three Saturdays in August, something magical happens in Manhattan. Stretching from the legendary Brooklyn Bridge to the iconic Central Park, New Yorkers and visitors are invited to explore the streets car-free for the annual Summer Streets NYC event. If you need something to do this month, spend a Saturday afternoon exploring the city streets of New York without a car in sight!
What Is Summer Streets NYC All About?
This free festival aims to encourage healthy recreation, including traversing the iconic New York City streets on foot or by bicycle. There won’t be cabs rushing curbside, and there won’t be idling delivery trucks blocking lanes. When Summer Streets NYC is happening, Park Avenue and its connecting streets are restricted to all motor vehicles. So, explore all the festivities on foot, and bring the family for summertime adventures!
The Official Details
The corridor that connects Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge, stretching from Park Avenue and Lafayette Street, will be open to the public for aimless strolling, biking, walking, and perusing. From 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM for three upcoming Saturdays in August, residents and tourists can take to the streets to experience a host of exciting activities and sights to see. And there won’t be a vehicle around, making it an incredibly fun way to explore the area and enjoy the quieter perspective of Lower Manhattan.
Free Activities Everyone Will Love
There will be musical performances and dance numbers dotted along the participating streets. There will be a climbing wall and even a 165-foot zip line for those more interested in a little extreme fun and fitness! Check out the water slide to cool off. For anyone exploring more rigorous exercise or those who may be concerned about the summer heat, there will also be “rest stops” with plenty of fun and entertainment around every block.
Sponsors and Supporters
New York City’s Department of Transportation will be hosting incredibly unique public art installations, activities, and performances along some of those rest stops en route. Other brand partners for Summer Streets NYC include popular consumer brands, other municipal supporters, individual artists, and nonprofits focused on healthy living and sustainability. Most of the activities offered during the festival involve promoting fitness, recreational outdoor fun, and the arts.
Every year, it’s estimated some 300,000 people take to the streets for a little Summer Streets NYC fun! Don’t miss out and explore Lower Manhattan one of these three Saturdays in August for yourself!
And don’t forget, October will be here before you know it, which means The Event Planner Expo 2022 is closer than you think.
