What is Earth Day and How Did it Start?
Earth Day is a worldwide event that was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson. At that time, there weren't any legal or regulatory laws to protect the planet, and the Senator from Wisconsin decided to take a stand. To force the issue on this national emergency, Earth Day was founded with over 20 million Americans demonstrating all over the country. Later that same year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was created to tackle those very issues.
Every year since then, Earth Day celebrates our connection to the planet and raises awareness on environmental challenges through various programming and events.
