10 Corporate Event Ideas That Don’t Feel Like Another Work Function

Nobody gets excited about an invitation that basically says, “Good news! You get to spend even more time with your coworkers.”

Corporate events have to clear a higher bar. People have already sat through the meetings, answered the emails, and heard the quarterly updates. If you want them to willingly stick around after 5:00, give them an experience that doesn’t feel like work wearing a cocktail dress.

Here are 10 places to start.

1. Take Over a Place People Already Want to Visit

An aquarium after hours. A rooftop with a ridiculous view. A museum, arcade, botanical garden, brewery, or historic property.

Sometimes the easiest way to make a corporate event feel less corporate is simply to get everyone out of a ballroom.

2. Give Them a Really Good Dinner

Not a “networking dinner.” Dinner.

Book the restaurant everyone has been trying to get into, bring in a chef for a tasting menu, or turn dinner into an experience with unexpected courses and pairings. Keep the speeches short and let people enjoy themselves.

3. Host Field Day for Grown-Ups

This can go wonderfully off the rails with the right crowd.

Think relay races, giant lawn games, ridiculous team names, tug-of-war, food trucks, and prizes people will actually fight to win. Skip anything that requires athletic ability unless you’d like HR to remember your event for entirely different reasons.

4. Build a Night Around Comedy

A comedian or improv show gives everyone a shared experience without forcing participation. Want to push it further? Bring in an improv group that can incorporate harmless company references and audience suggestions.

Just make sure everyone understands that Dave from accounting is not material.

5. Rent the Arcade

Old-school games, pinball, skee-ball, racing simulators, air hockey. Add drinks and food, hand everyone some tokens or a game card, and there’s suddenly no need for an awkward icebreaker.

People will find each other.

6. Let Employees Choose Their Own Adventure

Not everybody wants to dance. Not everybody wants to play trivia, either.

Create different pockets within one event: a lively bar, games, food stations, a quieter lounge, interactive entertainment, maybe a hands-on activity. Guests can move toward whatever sounds fun instead of being marched through one mandatory agenda.

7. Make the Entertainment the Event

Instead of adding entertainment between announcements, flip the equation.

Host a concert, dueling piano night, magic show, casino night, immersive theater experience, or live competition. The company gathering becomes the excuse to see something great.

8. Plan the Company Picnic People Wish They Had as Kids

Forget lukewarm hot dogs under a pavilion.

Bring in great food trucks, frozen treats, live music, hammocks, yard games, shaded lounges, and something delightfully unnecessary, like bumper cars or a mechanical bull.

9. Do Something Your Team Can’t Do on a Normal Tuesday

Private stadium access. Sailing. A cooking competition. Indoor kart racing. Behind-the-scenes tours. A nighttime zoo experience.

The “I’ve never done this before” factor does a lot of heavy lifting.

10. Throw a Party. Seriously.

Not every corporate event needs a clever concept.

Find a fantastic venue. Serve good food. Hire a band or DJ. Give people somewhere comfortable to sit, somewhere irresistible to dance, and enough time to enjoy both.

No breakout session required.
