Polar Bear Plunge 2026

The Polar Bear Plunge is back in Coney Island for the annual New York City winter tradition that’s unlike the rest. Every year, thousands of New Yorkers head to the beach in the middle of winter to take a quick (and freezing!) dip in the Atlantic. It’s thrilling and absolutely iconic. People show up in costumes, cheer each other on, and turn a cold day into a full-blown event. Even if you don’t jump in yourself, it’s a fun excuse to bundle up and head to the beach to watch the bravest swimmers kick off the year with a splash. We have all the details, so you can see what all the buzz is about.

What is the Polar Bear Plunge at Coney Island?

The Polar Bear Plunge is an annual New Year’s Day tradition hosted by the Coney Island Polar Bear Club. This year, they are celebrating their 123rd year. Thousands of people gather on the beach to jump in the ocean, turning a freezing winter day into a beloved community event. The plunge also raises money for local nonprofits that support the Coney Island community.

When Is This Event?

The plunge takes place every year on New Year’s Day.

How Do I Sign Up?

You can register online in advance or on-site using your phone. Online registration is strongly encouraged so you can move through check-in faster. After registering, you’ll then receive a confirmation email with a QR code that must be scanned at the check-in table. Registration officially closes at 1:00 pm.

Does it Cost Anything to Participate?

There is no required fee to plunge, but a minimum donation of $30 is encouraged. Donations support Coney Island-based nonprofits. Plungers who raise $50 or more receive a limited edition New Year’s Day beanie while supplies last.

Where Exactly Does Everyone Meet?

Check-in is at the Luna Park Scream Zone entrance on Stillwell Avenue. This is where all participants must pick up their wristband before heading to the beach. Plunging without a wristband can result in a fine, so this step is mandatory.

What’s The Schedule?

Check-in opens at 10:00 am. The plunge shoot opens at 11:00 am. Registration closes at 1:00 pm, with the last chance to plunge at 1:30 pm. The event officially ends at 2:00 pm.

What’s the Experience Like?

There’s a lot of excitement around this event. The crowd is lively, and the spectators will be cheering the swimmers on. You’ll receive a wristband, an “I Did It” certificate (while supplies last), and any fundraising incentives you earned. Wear anything from a swimsuit to a full costume, and bring a towel, warm clothes, and old shoes. Lockers and changing areas are available but limited, so plan accordingly.
