Birthdays are a big deal. It’s an excuse to celebrate friends and loved ones on the day the world welcomed them! Milestone birthdays are especially significant for most, and as a New York event planner, standing out and making miracles happen is the name of the game. There’s the classic sweet sixteen all the way up to the centenarian celebration. Whatever milestone, age, or accomplishment-related, these themes will undoubtedly impress clients looking to celebrate life.

1. Dawning of a New Decade

This classic milestone birthday theme celebrates the age itself. While not entirely profound, the straightforward decade celebration can be a leading thought in developing so many other birthday party nuances. Typically, this type of theme is related to specific decades, with the largest including:

  • 30s
  • 40s
  • 50s
  • 60s
  • 90s
  • 100s

Other birthdays, like someone’s 21st or 65th, are also exciting and typically revolve around being able to legally drink alcohol or retirement, respectively.

Celebrating decades of life can include all sorts of quirky or symbolic decor, music, or dress codes like:

  • The Roaring Thirties (30s): filled with classic flapper dresses, jazz music, and Big Bands.
  • The Golden Age (50s): classic cars, rock ‘n roll, poodle skirts and swing dancing.
  • The Eighties (80s): big hair with even bigger music.

2. Over the Hill

This classic birthday theme is usually for those turning 40, alluding to the average American lifespan being halfway finished. Cheeky nods to the woes of aging are a fun way to ring in a new set of priorities, reflect on life’s accomplishments, and bask in the friendships and family ties created thus far.

3. A Birthday Roast

If your event client is the type with a sense of humor, consider a formal comedy roast! Perfect for those who have an exciting and adventurous life or who might just be a little quirky, a roast is a fantastic event to reflect on important life events with a ton of laughs.

Make this as formal or informal as needed. Black tie roast events are a glamorous affair, but your client may have a more comedy-club feel about them.

4. Blasting the Bucket List

At some point, most people tend to form a bucket list of experiences or accomplishments they want to check off before they “kick the bucket”. Incorporating a bucket list item into a milestone birthday adds a personal touch to the whole event. The approach can vary on this theme, meaning it could be the driving force behind the decor and catering choices or act as the grand finale gift for the birthday guest of honor (as a guest contribution.)

5. Masquerade Ball

This social celebration theme has yet to go out of style. A masquerade is a fantasy-forward birthday event theme that can easily be curated to a host of interests. From book universes to sci-fi and magical cooperative games (looking at you, Dungeons and Dragons fans,) a masquerade ball creates whimsy, fun, and adventure all in one.

6. Back to the Future-ish

Technology has become something most events incorporate for entertainment, ambiance, or logistics. Consider using this technology to your advantage with special birthday events by offering an interactive booth, a game-station-type setup, or even a fun futuristic photo booth.

AI and virtual reality are tools that can elevate and expand birthday guests’ experiences beyond their imagination. Send guests back to a decade simulation relevant to the guest of honor’s age or theme, or leap into virtual gamified activities and get lost in the interactive experiences AI has to offer.
