Even in 2025, planners are making the same common mistakes that cost them visibility, engagement, and attendees.

Think you’ve got social media down? The truth is, platforms and best practices keep changing. If you're not adjusting your approach, you could be missing out on big opportunities.

Let’s walk through five common mistakes planners are still making, and what to do instead to stay ahead and keep your audience tuned in.

1. Skipping Real Audience Engagement

You can’t just post and disappear. If you’re not talking with your audience, you’re losing them.

Many planners still post content without knowing what their audience actually wants.

Use tools like Instagram Insights or Twitter Analytics to see what topics and formats get the most likes, shares, and views. Then post more of that.

Also, don’t leave comments or DMs hanging. Replying shows people you’re paying attention. It builds trust. And when others see you responding, they’re more likely to join in too.

Want an easy way to boost engagement? Use polls, questions, or quizzes. These features make people feel included. And they keep your audience coming back to interact.

2. Letting Automation Take Over

Scheduling tools are helpful, but too much automation can make your brand feel cold.

If you're only posting generic content, your audience will scroll right past it.

Customize your tone. Make your posts feel like they're coming from a real person, not a robot.

And don’t disappear once the post goes live. Social is meant to be social. Stay active during your event, respond in real time, share live updates, and jump into the comments.

Also, keep an eye on trends

Automated posts won’t adjust when something goes viral. If you’re not plugged in, you’ll miss easy chances to boost your reach with timely content or trending hashtags.

3. Copy-Pasting the Same Content Across Platforms

Each social platform is different. So your content should be too.

Copying the exact same post everywhere? That strategy doesn’t work anymore.

What lands on LinkedIn probably won’t hit on TikTok. Instagram is all about visuals. Twitter thrives on short, punchy updates. Facebook can handle longer, story-driven posts.

You also can’t ignore platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels.

These are where your audience is scrolling, especially when it comes to events. BTS clips and real-time moments perform well here.

And for corporate or B2B events, don’t sleep on LinkedIn. Highlight speakers, share agenda sneak peeks, and promote networking opportunities to tap into your professional audience.

4. Not Tracking What’s Actually Working

If you’re not checking your numbers, you’re guessing.

Make it a habit to track things like reach, likes, comments, clicks, and new followers. These metrics tell you what’s working and what isn’t.

Let the data guide your next move.

If your videos are getting more love than graphics, post more videos. If certain times of day get better results, shift your schedule.

Social media isn’t a “set it and forget it” kind of thing. It needs regular tweaks.

Also, don’t forget about results that actually matter, like sign-ups, ticket sales, or app downloads. Use promo codes or tracking links to see what’s driving action.

Likes are nice, but conversions are what count.

5. Mishandling Negative Comments or Crises

If someone complains on social and you ignore it (or worse, respond poorly), it can blow up fast.

You need to monitor your channels and respond to negative feedback with empathy.

Don’t be defensive. Acknowledge the issue and explain what you're doing to fix it.

And don’t wait until something goes wrong to figure out how to respond. Have a basic crisis plan in place: Who’s in charge? What tone should you use? How quickly should you reply?

A fast, respectful response builds trust. A slow or tone-deaf one can turn a small problem into a public disaster.

Social Media Isn’t Optional. It’s Strategic.

If you want your events to stay relevant and visible in 2025, you’ve got to do more than post pretty graphics.

Engage your audience. Track what’s working. Stay flexible. And always bring the human touch.

Social media isn’t just a megaphone. It’s where your event brand builds real community. Use it wisely, and your audience will do the rest.
