Known as the brutally honest marketing guru who tells it like it is, Gary Vaynerchuk, AKA Gary Vee is one of the world’s most successful entrepreneur, speaker, author, and internet personality. While this 43-year-old mastermind was once known as a wine critic who helped expand his family’s wine business, today Gary Vee is mostly recognized for his social media and digital marketing genius.

As the Chairman of VaynerX, an innovative communications holding and media company, and CEO of VaynerMedia, an advertising agency with Fortune 100 clients being serviced across their 4 locations, Vaynerchuk’s accomplishments have positioned him to be one of the top marketing gurus in our modern day.

Having cultivated his family business from going from a $3-60MM in sales over a 5-year period, this marketing expert’s story is one worth knowing about.

The Story Behind Gary Vaynerchuk

Prior to buying the New York Jets being Gary’s ultimate goal, he was one of 8 family members who lived in Queens, NY stuffed into a fairly small studio apartment. He comes from a hardworking family who traveled to the US from Belarus back in 1978. From Queens they relocated to Edison, New Jersey where Vee launched his first franchise at age 7…a lemonade franchise that is. That wasn’t enough for the budding entrepreneur so as he got older, he thought about how to multiply his earnings. By the time he reached high school, he was selling baseball cards and toys that were worth thousands of dollars in sales.

Right before Gary Vee coined “the internet” as the land of sales opportunities in the latter part of the 1990s, his family brought him in to work at their liquor store business to bag ice for $2/hr.

Although he was only 14 when he joined the family business, it wasn’t long before he realized how he can help multiply sales by transitioning the liquor store into an online sales platform for selling alcohol across the U.S. The sales growth was explosive and the “Wine Library” became Gary’s first truly fruitful business venture.

Vaynerchuk’s Contributions to Marketing

Having learned how to leverage from expanding your business from being a brick and mortar to the endless virtual real estate that is the internet, Gary began talking about his experiences to help business owners do the same. He started WineLibraryTV in 2006 where episodes could be watched by the public on YouTube. He produced a new episode daily over a 5-year period in which time he had gained an entirely new audience who admired his ability to engage viewers while speaking on ecommerce, the impact of content marketing, and the power of Google AdWords.

One of the most notable turning points in Vee’s career was in 2008 when he was invited to be a keynote speaker at Web 2.0 in NYC  which led to a 10-book deal worth $1M with HarperCollins. His first book called “Crush It” was published a year later and became a bestseller around the globe and helped earn him the title of being one of the top marketing gurus. He taught readers about communications, media, and marketing and it wasn’t long before business owners were reaching out to him to request that he help them multiply sales as he did for his family’s business.
