From sweet frosting to creamy fillings, to the extreme moisture in every bite, it’s quite difficult not to love cakes! If you had to choose the one thing you love about cakes, what would it be? We would say it’s hard to choose just one thing. Years ago, a traditional slice of cake consisted of yellow cake mix and vanilla frosting but that’s just the thing, it was too vanilla. Over time, bakers started to play with ingredients, flavors, colors, and décor as customization for cakes was in high demand.

The Evolution of Cakes

The perception of what a cake should look like has evolved over time. Back in the days, people were satisfied with a classic ice cream cake from places like Baskin Robbins or Carvel and the most exciting ingredient would be the infamous crunchies in the middle of the cake.

The next revolutionary cake design element was the introduction to printing edible images that can be placed on a cake to make it more personalized. Anyone remember how groundbreaking it seemed to be able to have your picture on a cake? Little did we know…

Over time, chefs and caterers began using ingredients like fondant to sculpt impressive cake creations and then hand painted the fondant to fit the event theme. Piping the frosting over the cake and using 3-D decorative Items like flowers to add to the cake décor, or for wedding cakes you would see the delicate edible silver or gold dots or beads. That was the beginning of the cake revolution.

With the popularity of posting images on social media platforms, it seems as if chefs and caterers are putting in their best efforts to beat their competitors as each cake image is more striking than the last. Now, it is not a rarity to see intricately designed cakes with layers upon layers of appetizing artistry.
