The Village Halloween Parade Takes Over Greenwich Village
Halloween happens to be on a Saturday this year, and Greenwich Village has a pretty good way to celebrate. The annual Village Halloween Parade returns to Sixth Avenue on October 31st. Giant puppets, live music, dancers, elaborate costumes, and thousands of New Yorkers will fill the streets.
The parade starts at 7:00 PM and goes from King Street to West 15th Street. It’s happening even if there’s rain, shine, or wind, so even a little October weather won’t ruin the plan.
This Year’s Theme Is Body & Soul
The 2026 parade theme, Body & Soul, explores the connection between the physical body and the spirit. The concept fits the parade pretty well. Costumes, puppetry, music, dance, and pure imagination all get a turn on the streets of Greenwich Village.
This year also brings a new featured performance called Firehorse! The spectacular puppet production celebrates the Year of the Horse and features dancing Firehorses created by MacArthur “Genius” and master puppeteer Basil Twist. Performance artist Julie Atlas Muz choreographed the piece.
The Firehorses will lead the parade and clear the way for the thousands of costumed participants who follow.
Joey Arias Leads the Way
The parade’s 2026 Grand Marshal is Joey Arias, a legendary downtown performer known for his work as a cabaret singer, jazz vocalist, songwriter, drag performer, and theater artist. He has also performed internationally and appeared in productions such as Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity.
In other words, the parade picked someone who knows a thing or two about putting on a show.
You Can Watch or Join In
Watching the parade is free, and you can find a spot along Sixth Avenue between King Street and West 15th Street. The route gets especially crowded from Bleecker Street to 14th Street, so arrive early if you want a clear view.
Want to become part of the spectacle? Put on a costume and join the parade. Costumed participants should head to the lineup area at Canal Street and Sixth Avenue between 6:30 and 9:00 PM. The parade admits participants in groups, so expect some time in the lineup before you hit the route.
The subway is the best way to get there, especially since parking around the parade route can be difficult and streets will close for the event.
Keep the Halloween Party Going
If one Halloween event isn’t enough, the Vampire Ball takes over Industry City in Brooklyn after the parade. The 21+ event features 10 stages of music, a Blood Rave, and plenty of gothic atmosphere. Doors open at 9 p.m., and the party continues late into the night.
The Village Halloween Parade dates back to 1973, and after more than five decades, it still gives New Yorkers one very good reason to put on a costume and take over the streets. On October 31st, Sixth Avenue belongs to Halloween.
