Día de los Muertos at NYBG

Día de los Muertos comes to the New York Botanical Garden for the first time this fall. From October 3rd through November 2nd, visitors can experience the holiday through music, dance, art, crafts, and family activities throughout the Garden.

A Celebration in the Garden

The Garden’s community ofrenda gives visitors a chance to take part in the tradition. Bring a photograph or written memory of someone you want to honor and add it to the altar. Weekend events include live Mexican folk music from Son Pecadores, plus workshops where you can make papel picado and silk flowers.

Families can also find guided activities throughout the Garden. Kids can learn about the symbols and stories behind Día de los Muertos, make crafts, and see giant puppets of La Catrina, skeletons, and monarch butterflies on select dates.

The big day comes on Sunday, November 1st. Crafts begin at 1:00 PM, followed by the Día de los Muertos Parade at 2:00 PM. After the parade, MAZarte Dance Company performs traditional Mexican dances. A cumbia sonidera class follows at 3:15 PM, then the party continues with music, dancing, crafts, and more until 5:00 PM.
